Four Pillars

A dream, a sentence, and a five-painting investigation of love.

2011–2013 · oil on canvas · each work 28 × 28 in.

The series began after Hart’s grandfather appeared in a vivid dream and tattooed a train and a sentence onto her hand and forearm: the idea that understanding love required understanding four pillars.

Hart began by sketching the dream before searching across religious, philosophical, and psychological traditions for recurring concepts. The resulting structure became Equality, Lust, Veracity, and Admiration.

Veracity marked the first deliberate use of floral symbolism in this body of work, using the white chrysanthemum as a signifier of truth.
